Energy Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Houses?
Straw bale houses and rammed earth construction both (try to) use local environmentally friendly materials. Pive solar heating and cooling methods should be used. Solar water heating and hydronics are a good strategy. Try to utilize any available alternative energy sources such as photovoltaics, wind generated power, micro-hydro power, geo-thermal etc. Energy efficient appliances like front loading washers (uses way less water too) and Sun Frost refrigerators will help . Energy conservation strategies such as double pane windows with low-e gl, window treatments (ds), extra insulation, thermal m, compact flourescent or LED light bulbs, heavily insulated water pipes, weather stripping, heat exchangers for incoming fresh air, skylights, etc. will produce some of the greatest returns on investment in terms of cost/benefit for energy expenses. Recycling graywater systems, rain collection sytems, and water conserving landscaping help with water conservation. Grow your own food as much as possible...this is great on many levels!! Recycle, re-use, and tread lightly!! Good luck!!!
